Fish Tacos

Fish Tacos

Today we are going to be looking at how to make an amazing and super easy to make Fish Taco recipe! Usually, Tacos are made with ground beef, in a soft or crunchy shell and topped with salsa, lettuce, cheese and sour cream. A fish taco takes this concept and changes it up by replacing the ground beef with a light and flaky, fried piece of breaded white fish such as Cod or Haddock. Along with this, rather than a traditional salsa and sour cream topping, fish tacos typically use tartar sauce, lime juice, chopped jalapenos and shredded red cabbage as toppings. Not to mention they typically are easier to eat and traditionally made with soft taco shells.

Let’s begin with what you will need:

  • 1 c. panko bread crumbs
  • 1 egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 lb. cod or haddock cut into strips (Available Here!)
  • kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 8 corn tortillas
  • 2 c. shredded red cabbage
  • 1/2 c. tartar sauce
  • 1/2 c. chopped pickled jalapeños
  • 1 lime, cut into wedges

Let’s begin by cutting your fish into small strips. They should be about half and inch thick since this will speed up the frying process and you can always add as many sticks as you’d like to your tacos.

Once you have cut your fish into strips, you are going to be breading them. In a bowl, combine 1 egg and 1 tablespoon of water. Beat your egg gently until the water and egg are mixed well together. Next up, take your Panko, salt and black pepper and combine these together in a bowl. Finally, place your all all purpose flour in a third separate bowl. Now, dip each fish strip into the flour first, then into the egg mixture and finally, into your panko mixture. Repeat this process for all of your fish.

Now you are ready to fry your fish. In a large skillet and with about 1 inch of vegetable oil, fry your fish sticks for roughly 2-3 minutes per side while making sure the entire fish stick is a nice even and golden colour.

Finally, it is time to heat up your tortillas. This can be done either in the microwave for very quick results or you can warm them up in a completely dry pan on the stove for about 30 seconds on each side on low heat.

When making your tacos feel free to layer whichever way you like but typically, you will want to have your shredded red cabbage on the bottom, then your fish, then pieces of jalapeño and your tartar sauce and finally, top them all off with a squeeze of lime juice and get ready to enjoy!
