Classic Fish and Chips

Classic Fish and Chips

Today we are going to be deep diving into a classic feel good food. This particular dish has been enjoyed both at classy restaurants and at small shacks along the beach respectively. We are indeed talking about Fish and Chips! Now, Fish and Chips does not exactly encompass what goes into making this dish so we are going to chop this recipe into a few different sections so we can truly get every aspect done.

The Fish

The two most important parts of a Fish and Chips meal just so happens to be the Fish and well the Chips. First, let’s talk about the fish. The fish used to make fish and chips is typically Cod. Some people have used Haddock to make fish and chips before but by using Cod you ensure that your fish will stay firm throughout the deep frying process.

Now that you’ve selected the type of fish you will be using to make your Fish and Chips, now we can talk about how to make a classic beer batter!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • ¾ cup of all purpose flour
  • 1 bottle of Beer (Typically Ales are used to make a beer batter)
  • ½ teaspoon of black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon of cayenne pepper

That’s it! Just four ingredients! This beer batter can be used on more than just Fish, you can make amazing chicken tenders, nuggets and even Onions rings using this amazing batter.

Once you have coated your pieces of fish, deep fry or pan fry in about one inch of oil for about 5-6 minutes or until they are a beautiful golden brown and crispy on the outside.

The Chips

In Canada, Chips are very thinly sliced pieces of potato that are fried to a crisp and seasoned in a variety of flavours. In Britain, Chips are actually what we call French Fries. As for the types of fries you can have, do not be afraid to mix it up a little with tater tots, or even waffle fries!

 Tartar Sauce

Tartar sauce is the classic condiment of choice when it comes to fish and chips. The easiest way to make tartar sauce is to combine Mayonnaise and Relish together in a small bowl. If you want to change things up a little bit, you could add a little bit of Honey Dijon to the mix.
